The ever talented Matt Inman (cartoonist for The Oatmeal) indulges his audience at BAHfest (Bad Ad Hoc Festival), on what a bad hoc hypothesis is all about. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, ad hoc hypothesizing is a scientific tool used to adjust anomalies within a theory that has not yet been modified. Obviously, in the realm of science, one must validate said adjustments, and usually the community frowns on such use to begin with because it allows for ridiculously added complexity to a theory in order to sustain it. But, ad hoc isn’t bad either. Einstein had to utilize it in order to support his static universe theory.
As you can see from the skit, ad hoc is frequently used all the time within religious arguments in order to maintain the completely unsupportable claims of a deity’s existence. That was the point of this skit. It clearly demonstrates the far reaches one can take unsupportable claims with loosely put together ideas to justify truth in the face of obvious falsities. This is also hearing handicapped friendly with a sign language interpreter on hand during the entire skit.
**Mild adult humor. Might want to watch with earphones on or skip the Brazilian Wandering spider bit.**
