The First Amendment not only allows citizens the freedom to practice (or not to practice) any religion of their choice but also prevents the government from officially recognizing or favoring any religion. We believe that a Separation of Church and State is imperative to protect these rights for both theists and nontheists.
Example violations:
- Prayer at school-sponsored events such as graduations, assemblies, and sporting events
- Teaching creationism within a public school
- Crosses, posters, or other religious symbols within a public school
- Religious displays on government property (ie: nativity scenes)
- Prayer at government meetings
- Government funding of religious hospitals that refuse to provide certain kinds of reproductive health care services for religious reasons
- “Prayer breakfasts” endorsed by government officials and/or financed with government funds
We work in cooperation with the Freedom From Religion Foundation to address these violations and pursue legal action if necessary. All reports will remain anonymous but please provide contact information so that we can follow up with you for details regarding the violation.
