January’s monthly meeting featured Hiba Krisht. Hiba Krisht spoke to us about growing up in Hezbollah culture and the parallels between that and the state of political and conservative Christianity in the US. She discussed Reem Riyashi (Palestinian suicide bomber with Hamas who died in 2011.)
Hiba Krisht is a writer and professional translator from Beirut. Her literary work appears in The Kenyon Review, Blackbird,Hayden’s Ferry Review, and Mizna, and among other journals. She is a recipient of the 2012 Jane Foulkes Malone Fellowship from Indiana University and the 2013 JoAnn Athanas Memorial Award in literature from the National Society of Arts and Letters. She runs the Ex-Hijabi Photo Journal and is working on a memoir expansion of her retired Freethought Blog, A Veil and a Dark Place, in book form. She has been interviewed about her life and work for VICE, BBC radio, and Grazia, among others.
In addition, Georgine Getty presented information on the support we will be providing to the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) in 2016. IHN is a unique partnership of religious and community organizations that provide shelter, meals and support services to families experiencing homelessness.
